Yacht Share FAQ

Yacht Share with Sydney by Sail is simple, but there are many questions you might have before you buy a share. Here’s a few that we’ve answered for you.

What Do I Need to Bring on the Yacht?

All you need to bring is food, drinks, and a sense of adventure.  The boat has a fully-equipped kitchen with all plates, cutlery, pots, pans, kettle etc., all of which is cleaned afterwards by our staff as part of the Yacht Share program. Linen is also provided.

Do I have to know how to sail?

Past ownership or charter experience is helpful but as long as you have some sailing experience to a reasonable level to be able to handle the yacht, then we can train you further to a level where you’ll be able to comfortably operate your boat.

Every 10% share in the Yacht Share program includes a complimentary package of certified training, and private tuition. This includes the International Bareboat Skipper Certification – 1 day theory & 3 day practical course – as well as two days private tuition giving best practice instruction to improve your handling and operation skills.

Do I need to bring safety equipment?

No, all required safety equipment is already on board, including lifejackets, flares, first aid kit, fire blanket, fire extinguisher, and EPIRB.

Can catering be arranged?

Yes, we can arrange catering for you that can be delivered and ready and waiting on board. Drinks can also be ordered from our supplier and iced up ready for consumption.

Please let us know your catering requirements including any dietary notes 5 days prior to your trip.

Where can I park my car?

There is plenty of car parking close by.  Discounted parking is available for Yacht Share owners and Yacht Share customers at the Harbourside parking structure next to the Novotel, accessed off Murray Street and only 100m from our base.

Directions from Harbourside parking structure to Sydney by Sail can be found here.

Can I unload my car close to the yacht?

Yes, simply call upon approach and we’ll arrange access.

Can I return the yacht after hours?

Yes, we simply have to alert the marina security. Please let us know during business hours so we can make the necessary preparations.

Am I restricted to only sail on Sydney Harbour?

No. It is common for Yacht Share owners to take the boat to Broken Bay and enjoy the idyllic surrounds of Cowan Creek, Pittwater, and parts of the Hawkesbury.

Our experienced staff have an in-depth knowledge of the area, so feel free to ask them for inspiration.

Can I go ashore even when I have the boat?

Yes. You can go ashore via dinghy or dock the boat at a visitor berth at a yacht club. As a Yacht Share owner, the boat is yours to use how you like whenever you have it booked.

Do I need to bring my own bedding?

No, we supply all linen and bedding. As part of the Yacht Share program we also launder it for you.

Can you help me dock the boat when I return?

Yes. Our staff are always at hand to assist with docking and can also come out to the boat and dock it for you if need be. Complimentary to our Yacht Share program are a number of training courses where we can also teach you how to safely dock your boat.

Can I provision the yacht close by?

Yes. There is a Coles and Liquorland just a 200m walk from our base.

Can I leave any items on the yacht?

Yes. Some Yacht Share owners are happy to leave items that they feel others might be able to use like binoculars, nautical publications, games and some cooking items. Please note that Sydney by Sail isn’t responsible for personal items left onboard.

Is a dinghy supplied with the yacht?

Many of the Yacht Share owners elect to contribute together and get an inflatable dinghy with an outboard motor that stays permanently on the boat.
